The NM State Legislature recently passed State Memorial 42 sponsored by Senator John Pinto to create Indian Arts and Culture Week. In celebration of this momentous achievement, SWAIA has scheduled a press conference that will jointly serve to acknowledge the Indian Arts and Culture Week Resolution and begin the 88th Annual Santa Fe Indian Market® festivities.

For the first time in it's 88-year history, the Santa Fe Indian Market® is introducing a Native Literary Arts event. In partnership with the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Shadow Catchers Institute, the event will feature readings and book signing by acclaimed poet Simon Ortiz (Acoma) and some of the country's most exciting emerging Native writers including poet Orlando White (Navajo), poet Sherwin Bitsui (Navajo), poet dg nanouk okpik (Inuit) and poet and fiction writer Erika T. Wurth (Apache/Chickasaw/Cherokee). The evening will be moderated by fiction writer Evelina Zuni Lucero (Isleta/San Juan Pueblo).

Since 1989 the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis has provided Native artists, authors and scholars a forum for their unique expressions. This discussion will provide insight into its nationally acclaimed Eiteljorg Fellowship for Native American Contemporary Fine Art program. Curators, artists and authors will present personal experiences with the Fellowship project, the newly launched Fellowship micro-site and reveal a plan for a major publication and traveling exhibition focusing on the Native American Fine Art collection.

The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), the Center for Contemporary Arts, Santa Fe (CCA) and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), present the 9th Annual Native Cinema Showcase, a four-day celebration of films and videos by and about indigenous peoples in connection with the Santa Fe Indian Market®. The showcase, that features 16 programs of film and video from seven countries, will take place in two central venues: the Cinematheque at the Center for Contemporary Arts and Cathedral Park, located in downtown Santa Fe, which is free and open to Indian Market attendees.

On Friday, August 22, SWAIA will present the 2009 Artist Award winners at the Best of Show Ceremony. This exclusive event takes place at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center. Best of Show is the only time the entire weekend where the best artists and best art of Indian Market are together in one place. It is also the most exclusive event of the week. The tickets are $200 per person and are available to SWAIA members at the Turquoise Level of membership or above.

SWAIA's Artist Awards Sneak Preview and General Preview give SWAIA members the opportunity to see the best of Indian Market art after the Awards Ceremony. Sneak Preview patrons are admitted at 5:30 pm. Sneak Preview tickets are a benefit of SWAIA memberships at Turquoise ($250) and above levels. Members at the Lapis and Coral levels are welcome during the General Preview, which runs from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

The annual award recognizes the contributions by a distinguished Native American artist to Native arts and Native culture. The recipients are those who have consistently demonstrated integrity and excellence in their work as well as in their lives, so as to influence the growth of Indian Art and inspire younger generations. The Pov'ika Award recognizes service, leadership and support that Native and non-Native people (the broad range of individuals who make up the Indian Market family) provide to the annual Santa Fe Indian Market® and to Native artists and their communities.

The Live Auction Gala has quickly become one of the most dynamic events of Indian Market weekend. Guests enjoy a fabulous evening of gourmet food and entertainment, while bidding on stunning Native art. This is the largest and most important fund raising event for SWAIA. The 1st Annual Wings of America/SWAIA Two-mile Fun Run and Walk

In an effort to promote Native health and wellness as an important part of the celebration of Indian Market weekend, SWAIA is pleased to partner with Wings of America to co-sponsor the 1st annual Wings/SWAIA Fun Run and Walk. The Fun Run and Walk will begin at 7:00am on Sunday, August 23 at the Santa Fe Indian School and end at a location close to Indian Market activities on the Santa Fe Plaza. Registration for the Fun Run and Walk is $15 per person, with all proceeds helping Wings runners attend the 2010 USATF in Spokane, WA. Although no awards will be issued, all registrants will be eligible to enter a special raffle contest for various prizes like Hopi sculptures or local venue gift certificates.
