2009: E Newsletter #3

July 14, 2009 - SWAIA

Hello Everyone,

I just returned from New York City where I joined pottery and jewelry gallery owners Charles King, Jill Giller, and Bill Faust for their 9th annual New York City spring show and sale. It was exceptionally well attended; many familiar faces, long-time collectors, Indian Market goers and supporters, and the curious too. Charles and Company ships a few hundred pots and jewelry pieces to New York for the show that provides a stunning array of the beauty and variety that is the best of the Native art world. A few of their artists also attend the show. I am sure you will be happy to know -although I was not specifically involved in sales -I watched many sales; and Charles King can wrap up a purchase like nobody's business.
I provided the entertainment, aka lecture on Saturday afternoon; focusing on Pueblo pottery's meanings and construction as well as its continued place of importance in Pueblo life. In addition, I gave a brief overview of 20th century potters and their triumphs of evolving the collector from curio to fine art. A round table discussion followed. The panel included Susan Folwell, Verma Nequatewa, Virgil Ortiz, Nathan Youngblood, and me. Jill Giller provided questions for each of focusing on the present and future of Native arts which also elicited discussion and comments from others on the panel. These four terrific artists shared many insights with the audience. Russell Sanchez, who did not participate on the panel, nonetheless provided his post-panel response.
It was wonderful to meet SWAIA members on their home-turf; many of them assuring me that would continue to support SWAIA and Native arts. Finally, it was nice to have a chance to chat with the artists present too; they provide me with an insight and understanding of Indian Markets past and future.
