Class X: Moving Images
Classification X: Moving Images (“Class X”) has seen a substantial increase in submissions over the six years of this newer Santa Fe Indian Market category. Native filmmakers can submit in the following categories: Animation Short; Narrative Short (fiction); Music Video; Full length Feature; Documentary Short (nonfiction); Youth Short (3 age groups); and Experimental Short (new creative uses of film/video; techniques, and form). Submissions are judged by top people in the film industry and winners are named in each category, which are then eligible to win Best of Classification, as well as Best of Show. Awards recognize an artist’s dedication and skill in working with media while retaining a commitment to traditional creation and technique.
SWAIA's Class X also gives great exposure to Native filmmakers. The public can view the winning entries of the Shorts categories during the Friday of Indian Market, at the Native Cinema Showcase. The Showcase is a collaboration between the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) and SWAIA. During the Showcase, roughly 5-10 full-length films, plus 50+ shorts (including SWAIA’s Class X winners), will be screened. The majority of screenings will be held at the New Mexico History Museum, 105 West Palace, from Monday August 15th through Sunday August 21st, 2016. Screenings are free to the public, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis.
