Gerti Sanchez – Mapoo “Corn Silk,” born in Isleta Pueblo, New Mexico. She has been a traditional Isleta potter for over 35 years making her award winning and very rare hand coiled pottery. Including the Lifetime Achceivement Allan Hauser Legacy Award Honoring Pueblo Potters.
Mapoo’s pottery is made by harvesting the raw clay from within the Isleta Pueblo Reservation. The raw clay is soaked and cleaned, further processed by adding tempers of volcanic ash and fine sand. Once the clay is prepared, building of the pot begins by hand coiling each row. Once dry, it is sanded and a thin layer of liquid clay, called slip, is applied, then the burnishing and polishing work is done with a river rock. The pot is then hand painted with a mixture of native plants and minerals. The last step is outdoor firing of the pottery.
