Melvin Platero is a 5th generation Navajo/Dine silversmith. Currently residing in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Born in Gallup, NM, he was raised in Bluewater Lake, NM by his grandparents, the late Ramone and Louise Platero, whom were both silversmiths themselves. He learned the basics of silversmithing from them as a young boy. It wasn't until later in life that he decided to create his own work. He has been creating Jewelry for less than 2 years, and continues to work a full time job, while creating in his free time. Breaking away from the traditional style his grandparents were known for, his work is contemporary and modern, using traditional tufa casting as the medium for creating his work. Seeking out quality stones and materials, he continues to learn and explore new ideas and methods for bringing his ideas to life.
