Wedding Vase

TRIBAL AFFILIATION:
Pueblo of Santa Clara

CLASSIFICATION:

BOOTH NUMBER:
FR S 313

MATERIAL/TECHNIQUE:
In order to create my art, I gather all materials locally in my Pueblo, (Santa Clara Pueblo). These materials include; clay, clay slips, wood, polishing stones, manure, and volcanic ash. I begin by processing my clay by hand and then mixing it as I was taught by my ancestors. All of my pottery is shaped using hand coils, I sand it, and then polish it using a clay slip and polishing stone from the river. To finish a piece, it is fired in a traditional outdoor firing. Manure is used to oxidize the pottery from its natural red color to black.
