Based in Oklahoma, Shelby Rowe is a proud citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, inspirational speaker, nationally recognized suicide prevention expert, mother of three sons and self-taught bead artist. She is descended from a Chickasaw medicine woman named Itti’ Ishay_a’_a’, translated in English as Mourning Tree. Like her ancestor, she has made it her purpose to mend brokenness, and that is reflected in her career in suicide prevention as well as in her art, where she specializes in beaded portraits. For Shelby, beads are tiny pieces of glass that have been precisely shaped, measured and deliberately broken. Those tiny, fragile broken pieces of glass become nearly indestructible, though, when they have been lovingly woven together. In 2016, Ms. Rowe was honored as the Chickasaw Nation Dynamic Woman of the Year.
