MATERIAL/TECHNIQUE:
Carol Emarthle Douglas began painting and drawing while sketching designs for her baskets. She paints with various media. Acrylic, paint pencil, water colors, pen and pencil. Her work is inspired by and from her coiled baskets. Painting figures and designs then transferring them to paper gives the subject more detail and color and more expression to her work. My baskets are woven in the Traditional/Contemporary technique. Traditional, as her baskets are created in the traditional coiling technique, contemporary, as her materials of choice include; spring hemp twine, waxed linen thread, reed, raffia and silk thread. Coiling is the traditional style using the figure eight stitch to connect the coiled rows. She has been weaving this style for 20 years
