MATERIAL/TECHNIQUE:
Peterson Chee Artist Statement:I am a second generation Navajo silversmith from Vanderwagen, New Mexico. I have worked as a Silversmith for 35 years on the Navajo Reservation specializing in traditional Navajo jewelry. One of the techniques that I use is a silver casting method that is called tufa casting to create original pieces. Other techniques that I use are a combination of soldering, stamping, bezeling stone, cabochon, cutting and forging silver. I specifically use natural materials that are native to the southwest region and found in traditional Navajo jewelry. The materials that I use are sterling silver, 14k gold, turquoise (Kingman, Sleeping beauty, Royston, Chinese, Blue Mountain), red coral, black onyx, diamonds, gemstones, coins, and leather. Using these methods and techniques I create traditional Navajo bracelets, cuffs, naja necklaces, squash blossom necklaces, earrings, pendants, concho belts, and buckles.
