My opinion of how functional items should look is well aligned with traditional Cheyenne thought, at least historically. If something is worth making, wearing or using, it should also be an item of beauty. Most items used in daily life such as moccasins, backrests, rawhide containers, deerskin clothing, horse gear, and tools were decorated. The design elements on an individual item identified its owner and maker. I take great pride in having one of my evening bags, jewelry boxes, or functional sculptures identified by an observer without an obvious maker's mark in view. Personally, I love using and wearing beautiful items.
