Virginia Yazzie Ballenger
MATERIAL/TECHNIQUE:
I create wearable art using silk/rayon velvets, cotton, wool and custom printed fabrics. The items are sewn by hand and sewing machines. Elements of turquoise stones and sterling silver buttons are included on some of the clothing. I create clothing for women, men and children. I incorporate pintucking (which is a sewing technique that involves folding the fabric and sewing very close to the edges to create ridges in a garment. This technique has been used historically by women of my Tribe to shape a garment before they had access to scissors. I design some of my fabrics and have them printed. I create blouses, skirts, coats and a line of craft items; purses, and Christmas stockings.
OUR MISSION
