Coiled Pottery Jar with Feather & Serpent Design

MATERIAL/TECHNIQUE:
The pottery material(s) used are a combination of hand dug earth’s natural clay: volcanic ash and natural red earth clay gathered in San Ildefonso Pueblo. Pottery is made by hand and are pinch pots and/or coiled formed. Pottery pieces dry and are sanded. Polishing/burnishing the pottery is done by hand with a river bed stone and red iron oxide natural clay also gathered from the San Ildefonso Pueblo. Painting traditional designs is done with a painting brush and also the red iron oxide natural clay. The last process is the firing of pottery which is done outdoors on ground, surrounded by cow manure and cedar wood, as well as horse manure.
